Many things can determine the value of one’s sports memorbila, merchandise, and baseball cards. Those things can be death, great accomplishments, or cheating the game.
In Mark McGwire’s case, he was a great hitter. He never accomplished anything GREAT (besides becoming the season king for HR’s if not Rookie year as well). As he is very well alive, so that won’t affect his value. So what is happening to his value and what will happen to it?
My opinion, stay the same if not raise. Now he admitted to doing steroids, why would his value raise? For that fact, he admitted it. Finally silencing that decade long question if he was doing it or not. The fact that it wasn’t a former US Senator that bashed him makes a lot of difference. Besides, many are looking to forget this event and come to re-love the former Athletics and Cardinals star. I know I have. That love will always have an asterisk before the name, as will Jose Canseco, but the love is still there, if not stronger than ever.
Another reason why the prices are going to stay the same is the allegations were believed before he announced it, and people may be shocked that he announced it, but remember, his allegations were accepted as fact long before this happened. I can remember countless times trying to defend my childhood hero because no credible report was out there. When the Mitchell Report came out, I skimmed it SO many times and found nothing with his name in the list. I believe there was also a list in 2003, that contained a few players. That I am not sure of, but I will find out.
Also, there is no market for Mark McGwire stuff at the moment. He basically dropped off the face of the earth as do most alleged (and confirmed) Steroid users. We never hear about Bonds, or Palmero… because they are retired, but the current players? Paul Lo Duca, and remember when Eric Gagne was on top of the world? We don’t hear of them, and we don’t hear of Ortiz or Manny as much as we used too. They are a totally different story though.
So it seems odd that I went through a lot of reasons just to slap it at the end that there virtually is no market? Don’t get me wrong, there is one, but when that phrase is thrown around it means a lot of people arn’t investing in his stuff because it has hit it’s peak and won’t ever rise due too he won’t be a member of the Hall of Fame, and his steroids.
So if you have his cards, I would say sell them now… They might rise for a bit but remember, this is only “hype.” We can call it “dead hype” because it is very similar to when a player dies. The market EXPLODES and you could make a print out of your card on the computer, and someone is bound to over-pay for it. Mark’s legacy officially died yesterday, although he is still alive, many people won’t accept him.
That is our look in on the McGwire market and what my predictions are for that.
