8 years folks.
I was sitting down from working on my car to watch some golf, and my NBC station (KARE11) cut from programming and said “Breaking News.” I am sitting here thinking oh great… what did Obama do or who died? To my amazement, they said Joe Mauer reached an agreement with the Twins for 8 years and $184 Million dollars… $184 Million Dollars… Wow. That is the price of greatness. Now he HASN’T signed YET, he will tomorrow. I once told one of my friends about a month ago, if Mauer leaves, I am done being a baseball fan. I have seen Hunter, Santana, Gomez, and many other greats and fan favorites go, but to have the best player in the AL, the best catcher ever, and our hometown hero leave, that would all be too much. He is locked up for 8 years… I also heard there is a no-trade clause but I was bouncing off the walls when I heard that so I may have heard wrong. But one thing is for sure, Joe Mauer ain’t leavin.
I also want to talk about Joe Nathan and the closing spot. It was announced today that he will have Tommy John surgery, but I think that is the best thing for him. I think Jon Rauch will get the closing spot, and Liriano is going to stay a starter. Neshek was a toss in, but I know he won’t get it, leaving Crain, Gurrier, and Rauch. Best of luck to the 4 guys up for consideration. Also get better soon Nathan.
Thanks for reading guys. I hope you enjoyed it
Nomar is Nomore.
Those three words have came to mind alot lately. I watch as another childhood favorite exits the stage. I remember why I even liked Normar. It was a simple game called Backyard Baseball 2002. Once and a while, I still sit and enjoy it. I was always upset when Normar came to the plate, because he would take so long to get into his stance. Ever since he left the Sox, I have only heard his name once or twice. Yesterday, in a half empty classroom after school, I read that Nomar Garciaparra, had left the game. I love the fashion in which he did it. He signed a 1-day contract with the Boston Red Sox, then announced his retirement. Just like Duece McAllister did this year, only he gave up a Super Bowl ring. He should have signed with the Saints for a few more days.
Baseball is here, Strasberg has finally hit the mound, and Nathan has been hurting, literally. My gym teacher is a big Tigers fan, and he was gloating about the fact that without Nathan, the Twins are no-bodies. That gave me a good laugh. We have the best catcher in the game, the best clean, DH in the game, and not to mention many players in there strongly such as Hudson, Hardy, Cuddyer, and Kevin Slowey.
Now I had the chance to go to the Metrodome last weekend for the DQ Gopher Baseball Classic. I witnessed 4 teams go at it. Layola Marrymount defeated the Oklahoma State Cowboys 2-0. Thomas Keeling pitched and the scouts were on him tightly. He was drafted in the 20th round by the Yankees last year. Then it was the Gophers and Northwestern Wildcats. We won (of course) 8-3, with a stupendious play at the plate to end it all. But it renewed something in me. It was the feeling of good clean baseball. These guys don’t get payed. These guys are out here trying to prove themselves, just trying to get noticed by someone. No, they are not WBC champions, or nor do they hoist the World Series trophy… This is baseball. No endorsements, or money. Baseball. I don’t know how many kids I saw go get foul balls. It was fun. I wish that the Pros would play like this too, but they have money at stake.
Snow still covers the Minnesotan land. Our fields can’t be played on, but especially in this small southern-MN town, baseball is in the air. It is finally here. Nothing do I enjoy better then the great American Pastime.
Spring Training has started… but doesn’t feel like it…
The Winter Olympics are ending up, and Spring Training is beginning. My mail is mostly directed to 2 places… Arizona and Florida. I just found out how easy it is to certify autographs through the kings of the buisness, so I will go ahead and score some middle grade autographs and have them certified just to see what it’s like.
Here in Minnesota, the snow is actually melting a bit, and around our grocery store, I actually saw some bare ground. I don’t hate snow, but it needs to go away. You can’t play baseball in a winter coat and boots.
So go team USA, and go Twins. I will see you when I hear that some big buisness has been going on… but on an interesting note, I heard that Heyward was bombing them so far he was hitting cars in the parking lot. HAHA
Twins, Spring Training, and the Opening Ceremony
First, I need to start off with the Opening Ceremony that is on right now. I think it is way out of line to try and compare this to Bejing. First off, what I have witnessed so far doesn’t come close to what that one was. I can garuntee you that London, Rio, and whatever else in between and past that won’t come close.
I think it hurt big time to have it indoors, in a CFL stadium. I did never know that those things were that big… Some say the sky is the limit, but when you cover it, you cant go any higher.
Next, is the countdown for spring training. Some big changes have taken place. Especially one that gave me a good laugh, and one that had me bouncing off the walls. Jacque Jones is back ladies and gentlemen. The man who helped save our team. I guess he was playing independent with Newark, and came and asked the Twins to sign him. Which they did.
Toby Gardenhire is comming to Ft. Myers. He is going to backup for Morales because he isnt doing so hot right now,.
We now have Hudson, which just puts m,ore emphasis on our spectacular team.
So have a happy Spring Training, and I will write again
Upper Deck Lawsuits, Book 3 Chapter 1
Upper Deck sued AGAIN? That is what I heard. No, not Topps or Konami, but rather the MLB/MLBPA. This is by word of mouth, so I don’t have much credibility to if this is true or not.
So I have heard, that Upper Deck was using MLB Logos in their new 2010 baseball set. This poses a bad state for them… because Topps is the only one that can do that. I was right… A base, baseball set cannot survive without logos, apparently UD thought the same thing.
But aside from that, something more disturbing has crossed my path…
According to some people (again I don’t know if this is true,) but through the grapevine someone has found out that Upper Deck’s jersey cards are fake, or a great portion of them at least. Over half is said to be store bought jerseys instead of game used.
If that isn’t the most shocking thing…
Think you have an Upper Deck Babe Ruth cut autograph? Think again. It is also said that Upper Deck is forgeing some of the games greatest stars and putting them on cardboard. I haven’t heard so much on the living players who sign on card and who sign stickers, but some of those may be fake as well, if everything I am hearing is true.
My personal opinion on the fakes? I have done some simple research, and nothing I found has come up saying “Upper Deck fakes cards” but I honestly don’t know. I watched a short video on fake memerobilia, and in that video, a well-known autograph forger, had thought something was fishy about a Babe Ruth autograph. PSA confirmed it was fake, but according to the guy who ran the ring that forged it, it was one of his guys. So I believe fakes are floating out there, but it might not be UD’s dirtywork. This is the third time Upper Deck has been in trouble in not too short a time. Remember the Topps lawsuit? Over O-Pee-Chee designs? Maybe a more recent one. Konami. Both trials have ended and I have never heard what the settlements were.
People are again chanting bankruptcy, but will it actually happen? It might. I cannot say if it will or not, because this is at least the second time in a year (as far as time span goes) that we have all heard it. I am honestly pulling for UD.
Why would I say that?
If UD goes, the only company holding Topps back is Panini-America, which is a rookie company in America. Topps has poor customer service/quality control, and they use the same ideas over and over. The only way to keep them contained is keeping the other big boy in there with him. Razor, TriStar, Just Minors, and Press Pass could care less what happens to the big boys, let alone stop them.
So yeah. It is a windy road that has come upon UD, but hey… I get to practice writing everytime this happens…
I will try and keep the readers posted… but for know this is what I know
Steven Tolleson is gone, but a few new guys look good.
I was fortunate enough to see Steven Tolleson in what was his last public apperance as a Twin, Saturday’s installment of TwinsFest. I managed to say hi and get his autograph. He may have appeared on Sunday as well, but still.
The Athletics claimed him off waivers.
JJ Hardy is also active in the Twins Community, touring on the Caravan with some of the Twins.
Jim Thome was at TwinsFest himself.
But with Thome here, I wonder what happens to Kubel? Personally I like Kubel more than Thome, he has a lot of potential, and has power. Thome can hit but can he field?
That’s about it
Special Collector’s Corner Edition Report: End of Upper Deck Upon Us?
A story broke today that Upper Deck was caught red-handed counterfeiting the famous Yu-Gi-Oh! card game cards that Konami apparently owns. Upper Deck used to produce the popular cards but recently lost them. Upper Deck slid past a lawsuit from Topps, where they claimed that Upper Deck was using some of Topps’ designs on there cards (O-Pee-Chee inserts) this year. Upper Deck was cleared of that, but this is much bigger, and if the lawsuit works for Konami, Upper Deck would be paying a hefty fine. This fine could bring down the entire company.
So what does this exactly mean to collector’s? Well, Upper Deck was slapped with some pretty big losses, such as the loss to produce licesnsed basketball and baseball products. They did however, manage to score the Collegiate market, which in itself is small. But because of that gain, as far as I know, the small, but trustworthy college football card producer SA-GE is out of buisness. Many collector’s are now wondering how good Upper Deck’s game used and autograph abilities are. Will this lawsuit unlock what is behind closed doors?
For those who don’t know, game used cards are pieces of game used equipment put into cards. These are starting to be questioned by every company in the game except for the ones below the radar.
What does it mean for the value of overall cards? Well if Upper Deck goes out of buisness, it’s last set (whatever that would be at the time) would probably be sought after, since it is the last one. If it is found out that we are all holding counterfeit game used? The price will surely drop dramatically.
But what about the counterfeit game cards that Upper Deck produced? Surely, I would think they would be a collector’s item, since after all, those 600,000 pieces of paper may put one company out buisness. There are ways to find out what the difference is, I might research just for fun on that one day.
So what does it mean for the possibly remaining big two, Panini – America and Topps? The collegiate market and hockey market would have to find new homes. But it would make Panini-America the sole producer of licensed football cards, since Topps can’t produce them anymore.
I know more is to come, so I will keep everyone posted on developments to come.
Special Edition: When Your Childhood Hero Does Wrong
Everyone knows about what happened with Mark McGwire today.
I think it is very sad.
When I was a kid, two sports figures stuck out to me. Micheal Jordan and Mark McGwire. Mac brought me the game of baseball when I was 3 or 4. I got a Mac poster for Christmas one year, probably in ’99. I still have it somewhere, and I will not get rid of it.
Most people who know me know that I like Josh Hamilton more than any other player. My family knew me growing up loving Mark McGwire. I don’t know why I was drawn to him so much.
What do you feel when the guy who brought the most important thing in your life to you (baseball to me) admits that he has done the worst thing against it? I literally almost broke down. I had fought for him, saying “No list I have EVER saw proved he was on steroids” and then they go on and on with no real proof. But in the back of my mind, I probably knew he was.
This Christmas some family members bought some cards for me and inside were 2 Mac cards that were from like 1998 or 99 and they were a Home Run History set featuring Mark McGwire. Those were the best cards I got that christmas. I still enjoy them.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate the man. Heck I am proud of him for admitting it. Just hours after he did an interview with Bob Costas. I watched the last half. It was saddening and upsetting all at the same time. I talked to many different people on the fact, and a few says he is trying to earn a HOF spot. I don’t know why he would come out at this time. Maybe just to put baseball nation at ease. Maybe it is a depression issue.
In the interview, he apparently thinks that Steroids have no performance effect on the body. We all know that is false.
What makes Mac different from any Manny, Big Papi, or Mitchell Reporter? That is easy. He came out and said it. We all remember Palmero lieing to congress’s face “I did not, I repeat did not use steroids” which he did. Most of the people on the stand did. The reason why is not clear. But Barry Bonds won’t admit it, Papi won’t…
Anyway, this “Special Edition” was a last resort rambling for me, I felt awful once I heard it, and I should have known.
I will give him forgivness, with an asterisk. I now know the truth, and I feel good about it
Come read tomarrow when the Collector’s Corner looks into his collectables, cards, and memerobilia, predicting what will happen to the prices.
Jarod Washburn to become a Twin?
I hear the Twins offered Jarod a 1 yr $5 million dollar deal to have him come to Target Field. My personal thought on this is that it would be great to get him in our rotation.
I really hope the Twins can come to a deal…
Anyone else counting the days until pitchers and catchers report? I certainly can’t wait for them to return to the field. Baseball has been gone for far too long. I can’t wait to get it back.
Anyway for this short edition of the OP, I thank you for reading
